Integrative medicine is a holistic evidence-based approach that focuses on the whole child. Rarely do symptoms and disease occur in isolation. Our body parts were beautifully designed to function cohesively. No bodily system can function on its own. When things go wrong in one system, inevitably, other systems will be affected...it's only a matter of time. Due to time constraints in conventional medicine, the focus is usually on just treating the symptom, failing to identify other associations. As a provider I am always asking “why did this symptom start?” and “why now?” and "What else is contributing?". We look at every child as a whole unique individual understanding that bodies may respond differently to the same internal and external triggers. One symptom can have many causes, and one cause can produce many symptoms. Investigating root-cause allows us not only to determine why a problem occurs but also how to best treat it. Addressing the most basic needs in a child will often improve and even optimize their well-being. For this reason, we also take a close look at nutrition, sleep, physical activity, and environment which can all play a role in neurodevelopmental disorders, skin disorders, gastrointestinal disease, allergies, mental health disorders (just to name a few).
The purpose of food is to sustain life, provide energy and promote growth and repair of tissues. In general, food should be thought of as "medicine" to heal your body or "poison" that will destroy your body. The type of food you eat can impact gut health, the immune system, skin and the nervous system. Junk food can destroy the gut microbiome and cause inflammation contributing to chronic illness.
In deep sleep the body repairs tissues, strengthens the immune system, supports brain function, plays a role in waste removal, is linked to the regulation of hormones (including GH) and promotes overall health and well-being. Poor sleep can impact the immune, endocrine and nervous systems contributing to chronic conditions.
Physical activity and active play not only help with physical health but also improves mood, sleep and brain function. Physical activity is important for healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Lack of physical activity can contribute to obesity, behavioral and mental health disorders.
Our body will naturally detoxify if it receives the proper nutrients to do so. Children are more vulnerable to the negative effects of toxins because of their growing and developing bodies and suboptimal diet. Many toxins can stay in a child's body for years contributing to illness and neurodevelopmental problems. Detox helps the liver and gut perform optimally to help rid the body of these toxins. It also helps strengthen the immune system.
Through mentoring we listen intently, educate and empower you, guide you, hold you accountable, encourage you and celebrate your wins. We believe that mentoring a parent through this journey can help improve outcome. "Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction" - Former US Representative John Crosby.
